Obbie Todd

Western Region

Obbie Todd takes the path less traveled. He hiked the entire Great Smoky Mountains National Park in a straight line, using GPS, topographical maps, and historical railroad maps. He’s also section-hiked most of the Appalachian Trail and will complete it all before leaving this beautiful earth. In Kentucky, he has canoed the category 4 rapids of the Little Rockcastle River in Daniel Boone National Forest and hiked Big South Fork, Mammoth Cave, and Land between the Lakes, North South trail.

His newest adventure is conquering the “Green River” (370 mi.), Kentucky’s longest river. Obbie began this journey at the spillway of the Green River Dam in Campbellsville and completed the quest this past year in Henderson, Kentucky where the Green empties into the Ohio River.

In addition to being an outdoor adventurist, Obbie has also been a naturalist in Daviess County for 20 plus years, giving nature tours and lectures throughout the parks of Owensboro.

Hi Obbie, If you really want to know the Green River start where it begins as a small stream in Lincoln County, Kentucky. I grew up swimming almost every day of summer in a hole of water in Lincoln County called the Rock Hole. The Green River is the boundry to my parents farm where I grew up and where they still live. I now take my own grand child there to skip rocks and play on hot summer days. She loves it as much as I did. We often just sit on the big rocks we call our “thinking rocks” and let the cares of the world float on downstream.
